Open WhatsApp, then go to Settings and Privacy. Look at these items.
- Last seen and online: choose who can see when you were last active.
- Profile photo and About: limit them to your contacts.
- Groups: choose who can add you to groups, so strangers cannot.
- Read receipts: turn them off if you do not want senders to see the blue ticks.
- Disappearing messages: set a default timer for new chats if you want old messages to vanish.
Menu names can change between versions, but these options have been part of WhatsApp for years.
Turn On Two-Step Verification
Two-step verification adds a six digit PIN that WhatsApp asks for from time to time and when you register the number on a new phone. Go to Settings, then Account, then Two-step verification. Add an email address, so that you can reset the PIN if you forget it. Never share this PIN with anyone.
Common WhatsApp Scams

| Hacked contact | A friend’s number asks for urgent money | Call the friend on a normal call first |
| Fake app update | A link asks you to install a “new WhatsApp” | Update only from the Play Store or App Store |

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I stop strangers from adding me to groups?
Open Settings, then Privacy, then Groups, and choose “My contacts” or “My contacts except”.

What should I do if my account is hacked?
Register your number again on your own phone to get the account back. Then turn on two-step verification, and warn your contacts.
What are WhatsApp Channels?
Channels are a way to follow updates from people and organisations. Your phone number is not shown to followers.
How do I report a scam message?
Open the chat, tap the contact name, and choose Report. You can also block the number.
