Have you ever questioned yourself, how many mobile phones are currently active in India.
From “active”, I think most of you already guessed it right, phones that have an active telecom connection.
Well, I already answered the same in the title, one billion mobile phones are active in India.
I am asserting the above statement based on a report published recently by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).
The report says “India records 1.155 billion active mobile subscriptions in December 2021”.
The report also reveals the market share of different telecom providers available in India.

Who do you think has the highest market share in the Indian Telecom Industry? I am talking about mobile prepaid and postpaid plans.
I think many of you guessed it right, of course, it’s Reliance Jio.
Reliance Jio has the biggest subscriber base at 36 percent.
Airtel is in second place having a 30.81 percent market share.
Vodafone Idea at the third and BSNL at the fourth with 23 percent and 9.90 percent market share respectively.
The report also reveals some other interesting facts listed below.
- In India, the total number of wireless subscribers in December 2021 is 1155 million out of which 633 million subscribers are from urban areas whereas 521 million subscribers are from rural areas.
- In December 2021, 8.54 million subscribers submitted requests for mobile number portability. Counting that, so far, 661.42 million MNP request has been brought since it was implemented in 2010.
So, right now there are around one billion active mobile users in India, experts estimate the number of smartphone users will reach one billion by the year 2026.
