In order to increase its profit, Airtel is going to discontinue its Rs 49 plan starting July 29, 2021.

The Rs 49 Plan falls under Airtel’s Smart Recharge plans list.

The Rs 49 Plan was launched in December 2019. It gives Rs 38.52 Talktime and 100 MB of data benefits valid for 28 days.

During the global pandemic in India, To help millions of its low-income customers, Airtel offered its Rs 49 plan for free (as a one-time gesture).

It seems like Airtel is now equalizing the same.

By scrapping the Rs 49 plan, now Rs 79 plan is the cheapest prepaid plan having talk time.

Rs 79 prepaid plan also came with 28 days of validity but it has double benefits in comparison to Rs 49 plan. For example, Rs 79 plan has Rs 64 Talktime, 1 p/sec Local/STD calls, 106 min outgoing calls, and 200 MB of data.

Consumers (not the low-income ones) who own two sim cards (in which one is of Airtel) generally choose the Rs 49 plan. In such a scenario, they use Airtel as a backup sim card having some talk time.

Other Plans Airtel Discontinues Recently

Last month, Airtel discontinued three of its prepaid plans – Rs 279, Rs 179, and Rs 45.

Also, by discontinuing these three plans, Airtel introduced Rs 128 Smart Recharge plan.

As per a recent report, the current Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) of Airtel is Rs 145 which is less in comparison to its ARPU in October-December last year.

The move to scrap the Rs 49 plan leaves Rs 79 plan as the cheapest option for a working sim card. The result is now a user recharge for a Rs 79 plan that in turn will increase the monthly ARPU of Airtel.
