In a bid to focus on other performing businesses, ByteDance on Monday announced via a press release that they are going to shut down two of their short video sharing apps called Vigo Video and Vigo lite in India by October 31st 2020. Both apps have already been shut down in Brazil and Middle East and now going to be shut down in India as it isn’t performing well in its biggest overseas market. Beside these three countries it is not certain yet whether the company enforces the same decision in other countries. However, many believe this might be the possibility.
In India, Vigo Video reportedly had around 4 million monthly active users last month whereas the Vigo Lite app able to grab only 1.5 million monthly active users. Also, in one year, both apps able to gain only 1 million users. However, if you compare the same data with TikTok (another ByteDance’s Commodity) then it has around 120 million monthly active users in India.
Vigo Video was started back in 2017 to allow users to create 15 seconds videos across different genres (that includes dance, food, stunt, beauty, art, comedy, music, and others) available on the platform. Now, Because the app is going to be shut down at the end of the October this year, the company said in the same press release that, they are soon going to give the existing Vigo Video users the tool to export their content on TikTok which the company has said is their leading short video sharing platform in India right now.
Users using the Vigo Video app will get the in-app notification about the shutdown along with detailed instruction on downloading their personal data or deleting their account permanently (that includes their videos, personal information, chats, and favourite list).
